The River Runs Black
Continuing my Ceramics from 2002.....the theme I am currently following is the 'web of life', utilising the many stands that form the weft and the warp of the weave of our lives and the many different facets that make up all the stands that interconnect until a cohesive whole is formed....be it ...Life or my ceramics.
Using stoneware clay and handweaving the extruded coils I form the shapes and then fire them before adding underglazes or final glazing.
"The child bride", Stoneware, handbuilt. 18" high x 14" wide
This is not the final version of this piece, I decided to remove the woven cloth and add some clay dipped lace nearer the top. This piece is redolent of the third world children forced to marry old grooms and held in silken captivity until they produce the required heir.
Flower Teapot and Cup & Saucer. Handbuilt stoneware with crystal flow glazing.12" high x 5" wide.
This is one of the first teapots in the seven teapot series made in the first half of 2002. This one has been chosen for a University exhibition in February 2003.
"Yang" Handbuilt stoneware approx. 22" high x 6" square
Weaving this was not easy! each coil wanted to break on the turns and then the height added to much weight and caused collapses...finally it was built and gingerly reached the kiln.....holding my breath while the kiln firing continued it was a very good feeling to see it had survived the firing and could now be glazed.See later picture for finished "Yang"
Set of three canisters and matching teapot."Mountains of the Cloud Gods"
Handbuilt stoneware with dry glazing outside and Temmoku Gloss inside. This set is in homage to the Gods of the Mountains, where the sky meets the land.
"Desert Drinker" Handbuilt stoneware with specialty glazes.
The camel was handbuilt as my second teapot in the series of seven. He sat for a long time before I decided on colors for his coat and his 'Djellabah'-rug. Selected for Exhibition 2003.
